We already give our action movie heroes such attention and praise we thought it would be a cool alternative to look at their nemeses and pay tribute. Since the villains and the problems they bring about generally define our heroes, we felt this was long overdue. So we conclude our feature of “Hurtinbombs’ Top Action Movie Villains” with our fifth and final selection:
Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving)
The Matrix Trilogy
Smith HAD to make the list, in many ways he encapsulates aspects of each of our top villains so far. Consider his slimy, condescending speech (Hans Gruber) his physical dominance (Sgt Scott) his glitchy, manic turns (The Joker) and his clinical cool (The T-1000) and you have the ultimate villain.
Introduced as one of the seemingly unstoppable Agent programs designed to maintain order within the Matrix world, Smith is first cold, condescending, but above all in control. The first signs that all is not quite right with this program appear during his desperate, bile filled interrogation of captured human leader Morpheus. His loathing for mankind along with the existence he has been prescribed to becoming glaringly apparent as he berates his near catatonic captive. Wiping out the resistance it seems is not only Smith’s duty, but his ambition, his dream and, he hopes, his salvation.
After his defeat at the hands of Neo, Smith becomes something more deadly, a rampant virus endlessly duplicating himself within the Matrix, taking over humans and other programs alike. Smith even manages to transfer his consciousness into the mind of a human being so that he can sabotage the resistance outside of the Matrix as well. Bane, the Smith infected human, also deserves note for his unnerving behavior. A psychotic computer program trapped inside the very flesh he detests? Self harm, homicide and general creepiness abound.
So what started life as an unstoppable yet logical force of order evolves into something way more malignant and out of control, something which threatens to destroy both realities, both sides indiscriminately. And as if that wasn’t bad enough Smith even tries to kill his own Mother.
“ I’d like to share a revelation that I’ve had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species and I realized that you’re not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You’re a plague and we are the cure.”
